When I first set out on my journey to make an independent game, I had a very narrow vision in mind. My sights were set on mobile, which is still largely the plan. As I move further along, my thoughts on the matter have changed. Now, that I am trying to get Knight Guy in front of potential players I am offering early access to a closed beta for YouTubers and streamers. Most of the best recording software works best with PC, so based on some feedback from Mr.WobblyFootGamer, I have added key mapping to the PC version, and I plan to continue to cater some features towards this new version. Eventually I hope to release a full fledged PC version of Knight Guy along side his mobile older brother. Let me know what platform you’d love to play Knight Guy on, and check out our two YouTube let’s play videos below, the second one is by Cole 4.0, so big shout out to him. Thanks for reading and have a great week.
One of the many challenges that independent game developers face is getting their name out there. Big companies and publishers want to use your creativity to rack in some serious cash, all the while leaving you with very little. For most people, artists and otherwise, expose won’t feed their kids, or pay their rent. So how does someone break past this money barrier? There are two things I discovered that I would like to share.
Don’t underestimate the power of networking. When people DM me on twitter I make it a point to get back to them, even if they are trying to sell me their services. The main point of this is your exposure. If a you tuber really wants you to look at his or her videos, you should do it and let them know what you think. (politely of course.) They are going to remember you and want to help you later on.
To share a personal experience about this, I was lucky enough to meet a youtuber who directly asked me if he could play and do a video for my game. So a huge thank you is in order for Mr.WobblyFootGamer, who did a gameplay video for Knight Guy and helped me share Knight Guy with so many of you. In turn I shared the heck out of his video and channel. Now two creative professionals just helped each other get exposure for little more than our time. That’s the key people, as artists, professionals, and people we have to be willing to help each other out. I got the video post for your viewing pleasure.
The second thing I learned is try new avenues for exposure. The established social medias are great, but take a chance on a start-up. On traditional social media like twitter and facebook, your message is lost in the cacophony of tens of millions of users world-wide posting what they are eating today. Don’t be afraid to branch out and stand out.
Recently I came across an industry connection service for indies called Likemindedd. It’s new and I will see how this works but I am excited that people are trying new things and creating new places to discover great indecent treasures. Here is a link to my project on Likemindedd if you want to check it out.
and here is the link if your interested in putting your project up on Likemindedd,
Alright guys and gals, thanks for reading. Happy Friday and I hope you all have a safe and fun weekend. Keep doing what you love, I know I will. 😀
Got through that hectic first week of finding your classes and hoping you make wait-lists. Unfortunately it was also a big walk at my work, so progress has been a little light. As always I promise you we are continuing to move forward. I am preparing the finishing steps on a press kit for Knight Guy, then that elusive trailer I keep mentioning might see the light of day. I wish you all well, and I hope you guys have had a good week. As for me it’s back to the grind stone, see you all soon.
Don’t forget you can get an early release version with as little as a one dollar donation, or a shirt purchase. Thanks again, for all the support.
Alas, summer is coming to an end. Currently I am hard at work making improvements to Knight Guy and putting them to the test. I have launched the first stage of story mode as a demo onto the test app and I am currently working on some bonus levels for players to unlock. I think having extras and unshockable content makes a game more rewarding and memorable.
To see some of these updates check out our latest video,
Soon my kid will start school, and so will I. I’m hoping to have time between calculus homework and the retail busy season to keep pushing out content and bug fixes. Wish me luck.
As an extra, I am offering inclusion in our play test group to anyone who donates at least a dollar on our site or purchases a t-shirt. Keep in mind it is only available for android at the moment. Thank you all and have a great day!
Hey everybody, I know it’s been a while since an update and I wanted to put something out there. I had a really busy summer, and although I had fun spending time with my family, I have not had the time to dedicate to Knight Guy. In addition to this, as I near a state of maturity in the project I am looking forward at marketing options. Making the trailer is part of it, creating a successful crowdfunding campaign and pushing social media awareness in an effective manner. I am still working diligently on a trailer for Knight Guy, video editing is very new to me, and it is not easy. I am still working at it nonetheless. I was really hoping to have Knight Guy out by now, but now I am going to take a little more time and really focus on creating a better game. I am adding some quality of life features, like a stats scree to track your kills and playtime, and I will be adding a few bonus levels to occupy some time before story mode is finished. I want to thank everyone for their patients, I work full time and it will not be an easy task to create a game on the side but I am in this and Knight Guy is still coming. Thank you all for the support.
So lately, I’ve been brainstorming how to put together an interesting trailer. Yes, of course it’s going to feature game play, but how do I introduce it to the audience? More over how do I do this in an interesting and captivating way?
My final solution takes me far away from the pixel art I am used to working with into a new medium, I am modeling a 3d room, with a retro video game set up. I will create a short animation, showing that Knight Guy is built on the fundamentals of recapturing these great games. This is unfamiliar territory for me, so it is a work in progress and I am learning as I go.
One cool thing I was able to do was add some posters for a few local bands. Glad to feature and support Let Us Chant and Cottonwood Creek in my work. Making this trailer is going to take a little longer than I expected, but it will be awesome and hopefully a lot of fun to watch and share.
Thank you for reading, don’t forget to pick up a T-shirt from the store to support the cause!
A few lucky people have been added to my short list of Knight Guy alpha testers. I am hoping that after a long break, I can detect and eliminate any bugs with the core game play prior to making a trailer or continuing work on the story. Once Arcade mode is at a place that I am happy with it I think I might move forward with a crowd funding campaign. The biggest cost associated with Knight Guy at the moment is time, and the more time I can step away from work, the faster and better I can develop it. Above and beyond that there are additional costs associated with development for ios, so just remember if you donate, or buy a shirt those are the types of things the money goes towards. If you’d like to support the project in other ways, you can always share us on social media, and tell your friends about us. Thank you all, I appreciate the support.
Hi everyone, so last week I was finally able to purchase my google developer license. This is what let’s someone actually publish a game and add all those cool extra features like online leader boards, achievements, and cloud saves. So far I have a working leader board for Knight Guy’s Arcade Mode, and I am working diligently to write the code necessary to track game play stats for achievements. I took a screen shot of the current leader board from the test group… Yes that’s me in last, I guess I’m better at making games, than playing them.
Hi everybody, finally got to compile some of my recent changes into an update video.
I added a combo counter that appears after killing at least three enemies in quick succession. I even added a bar to show players how soon they needed to slay the next evil doer to keep the combo going. Should be a fun way to be competitive and rack up some extra points.
I also added a timer, mostly just to let players know how long they have survived in arcade mode but it too rewards players with extra points for each minute they survive.
Finally, something that I’ve been meaning to get around to is changing those pesky squares on the fire and ice power ups. Now you see fireballs and snowflakes instead of giant colored pixels.
As always thanks for visiting, hope to have a game for you to play soon. You can check out the changes in the video below.
Hey everyone, it’s been a crazy week for me. One cool thing I noticed is that I was starting to get a lot more web traffic. Thanks to all of you of course. So in light of this new information, I’ve added a new section to the website called Games. Right now this section only displays information on Knight Guy, since that is our only project, but in the future will be a list of all of our games and an easy way for you, our good friends and soon to be friends to discover great games.
Check it out here –> Games
Thanks for helping make Dragoon Domain all that it is, and we hope to give you some exciting updates on Knight Guy early next week. Happy weekend!
